Poorly designed and untested SATA interface implementation. Works great on IDE interface, but on SATA its a complete failure. On Windows XP with SATA disk : unless you have highly fine tuned IO drivers this product will fail to transfer files with sizes of several MBytes. If you are looking for using this as USB to SATA , don't even bother to buy this product, its a complete waste of money you set aside to buy items in deals.

Love it love it love it. Currently using it at work on an XP Professional machine. Had to transfer years of data from my old system, but didn't have time before IT yanked it from my desktop. Old system was IDE, new system is SATA. Pulled out the old hard drive, hooked it up to this cable and now all of my data is accessible. Don't know how it works with other systems or OSs, but it's working great for me for the time being. I've recommended it to everyone. Free shipping too-a total bargain seeing as how other cables (some just IDE to USB) can be a great deal more expensive than this one. Hope it works with Vista (sigh).

Trying to hook up a new Maxtor 250GB ATA.
Computer says "found new hardware", but does not show up as a drive.
Totally unusable.
No hint of where I can find help.
$30 wasted ?

I order this product wednesday and got it on Friday. Free shipping. I am very pleased with service. Every thing comes in one package. Using it with wd 250 gig sata drive without any problem in win xp pro, no drivers required, works as advertised. Sata drives need not to be in master mode, infact sata drives need no master or slave settings anyway. IDE drives need to be in master mode though.Transfer speed is very fast I did not feel if it is external drive. Manual is skimpy one page. Package also comes with one touch backup software cd as well. win98 drivers are on cd, another folder on cd is usb 2.0 host controller driver which contains via and nec chipset drivers.

Pros: Shipping was fast, free and on time. The adapter has everything you need to hook up a hard drive to your USB port and go. After configuring my spare (5) PATA hard drives to master, it read everyone fine except one drive that I knew was bad. The included power supply is also handy for testing PC fans for direction of air flow. This is for anyone that wants to save time to get data from another pc thats not working, you need not even remove the drive from another PC to get the data, just plug this adapter in and get it. I did not test the SATA adapter yet, but glad it is there. The Price is Worth IT!
Cons: The diskette that comes with this set is virtually useless, has a backup program that does nothing. Some disks take a long time to be reconised by Windows XP SP2 & Vista (The larger the disk the longer the wait). No carrying case to put your loose items into.

I get the message "delayed write failure" then my files cannot be read and the disk is not displayed as being installed.
Does anyone have a fix for this.
Everyone I talk to says this device works for them.

Took 5 minutes to set up. Set HD to master. Plug into USB port, turned on the power switch. WinXP found and loaded the devices and drivers. Worked perfectly! Pulled USB connection, powered down, reinserted USB and powered up. Drive was found in approximately 10 seconds, so I don't know why othes say it takes so long to find the drive. I tried some old (>10 years) IDE drives and they don't seem to work with this adapter but who cares! This system realy work great!

I was disappointed that the adapter did not come with an on/off switch. I am not happy that my computer takes a long time to recognize the device, and I am not happy that the hard drives have to be set to a Master configuration. This means if you have a Western Digital Hard Drive or other brands where the default jumper configuration is Master Single, you have to change your jumper configuration to Master for the hard drive to be recongnized by the OS. So from now on when I use this with hard drives, I will have to change the jumpers around all the time.
Now the good things. I have tested out both IDE connectors and I like the fact that the 44 pin 2.5 hard drive connector for laptop drives does not require a power source from my desktop computer. It may require an extra adapter on the 40 pin with power if that is the case with laptops that do not work properly. I also like the dual functionality of having all three connectors on the device for IDE and SATA. Manual could have been a little bit better written since there are mispellings and minimal amount of information. I had to check this website for the Master jumper recommendation. I believe that this is a sturdy device as mentioned in other reviews. I sure would like to know why it takes so long to recognize this device in Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2. Also, as mentioned before there is no support online for this device.

Works well with any IDE Hard Drive, I had problems with the SATA Hard Drive.
It disconnects when transfer files from/to the Drive.I have to unplug and plug in again to have the connection with the Drive.I can't find any support from the Internet about this device.

Ordered on Thursday afternoon. Never expected it to show up in Saturday's mail! Unbelievable! This thing is a MUST HAVE if you do ANY upgrades at all. I have not tested the SATA interface, but the 2.5 HDD and 3.5 HDD work great! Allowed me to Ghost my old drives with no problems at all. I highly recommend this unit. The quality is very good, and it comes with everything you'll ever need to hook up any drive available today.
The only problem I ran into (has nothing to do with this product) was when hooking a 2.5 HDD to my laptop. My laptop is old, and only has built-in USB 1.0. I have a PCMCIA adapter with 4 USB 2.0 ports. The PCMCIA adapter did NOT have enough power to operate the 2.5 HDD without hooking up the adapter's external power. In other words, the drive draws a lot of power from the USB port. If you have a hub or PCMCIA adapter, make sure it has its own external power source.
In summary: This product gets 10 thumbs up!

Works well with a 3.5 IDE hard drive, but it did give me a problem with SATA hard drives. When transferring files over 5 GB, the USB connection would freeze and I would get an error. Don't know if it's the way the HD was formatted or what, but will try it again on the IDE's. Haven't tried using it on a 2.5 HD. Will come back to post for more.

Received in 4 days for CA to NJ. Good job guys!! A very nice addition to our IT Dept. The versatility of having SATA and IDE is a great feature for swapping hard drive of different interface.

Very handy. A must-have for anyone who gets asked to pull data off old drives when computers go bad. The first time you don't have to open a machine and connect an old drive to the IDE chain just so you can pull off your friend's MP3s and JPEGs, you'll be very happy you bought this thing. Put it in your toolkit.
