A great product. Very fast delivery time. I had a short moment of trouble with it (I had the USB cable connection misaligned) but once I had the cable properly attached to my dvd-rom drive it linked up to my laptop with no trouble at all. I would recommend it to anyone who needs either an external hard drive or a cd/dvd-rom drive for their computer.

Description says that this will support IDE/ATAPI Zip Drives. So far have been unable to have XP with the device recognize my 100 MB Zip Drive. Am running XP Home and have tried connecting cables in all variations of order, including plugging in and booting from a cold start, to no avail. My rating is neutral at the moment as I still have hope to solve this riddle.

I tried it on an old WD Caviar 31600 ddrive (1.6MB). It shows up in Device Manager as Disk 4 but not in My Computer. It does not show in Computer Management>Disk Management. Drives go from 0,1,2,3,5.
So drive is partially recognized but not completely. It may need to be initialized and formatted but I can't get to Disk Management to do so.
Any ideas? This is not the end of the world for $18 but it would be nice if I could get this to work. I experienced the same on another old drive, a Maxtor Model 7546AT, maybe a bit less than 1GB.
I'll leave a middle of the range rating for now since it may be a perfectly good device and I'm doing something wrong.

WIN98-SE... I got the device working after a couple of hours of frustration... Due to the fact that the instructions do not tell you exactly what to do....
.
The instructions say: Windows98 - Insert Driver CD to CDROM and run X:\win98\setup BEFORE you insert the cable to your computer...
.
Trouble is there is NO "win98" Folder on the supplied CD... So, I thought that meant I needed to insert my original Microsoft Windows98-SE CD... Tried that and it didn't work, and ended up loading some UNNEEDED network driver that caused an error message on the next reboot.... So, I used my "GoBack" program to revert my computer back to the way it was before I tried to install the device... Then I started over...
.
What you do is this: Insert the SUPPLIED CD, then go to the JM2033789 Folder, and double click the SETUP.EXE file. After just a couple of seconds, I got a "Setup Successful" message... So far, so good.....
.
Then set the jumpers on the hard drive you plan to use to MASTER... Then plug in the power cord to the device, and an AC outlet... Then plug in the IDE connector to the device, and the USB plug on the other end of the same cable to your computer.....
.
Windows then searches for New Hardware, and displays the Add New Hardware Wizard, asking you to specify where to find the Driver File for the device....
.
Click the Browze Button on the Add New Hardware Wizard and go to your CD-Drive and select the 68300_AT2 Folder on the supplied CD that came with the device.
.
I was confused about that, because there are other Folders in the 68300_AT2 Folder that look like they are ONLY for MacIntosh computers... On my 1st attempt, I tried all of the other Folders with no success... On my 2nd attempt, I selected the 68300_AT2 Folder and it loaded the correct Driver File....
.
You will see a message that says: Windows Driver File Search For - USB STORAGE ADAPTER AT2(TPP)... As the files are being loaded onto your computer, you will see several TPPxx files being loaded.
.
After the files load, you click the Finish Button, and the device should be working and your hard drive that is connected to the device should show up and be working, too.
.
You should also see an Icon on the Task Bar (with a green arrow)... When you want to unplug the device, right click that Icon first and DISABLE the device... You will then see a message that says the device can be SAFELY removed.
.
I only rated the device 3-Stars, because I just finished loading it a few minutes ago, and viewed the contents of the hard drive that is attached to the device, opened a couple of files, and saved a file and reopened it. So, I don't know yet how it will perform over a long period of time.
.
I hope these instructions will help any Windows98-SE users avoid a lot of wasted time and a lot of frustration like I experienced.

Excellent easy to use device. Intended for tech types. Used sucessfully in Windows XP and Linux (knoppix, ubuntu). Tested with older and newer name brand CD-RW drives, DVD ROM drives, and DVD recorders, all good; including being able to burn reliably. Would not recognize drives under 1 gig. Over 1 gig, and all is good.
This might help: I connect USB cable to running XP computer last. Connect power cable and device to IDE connector. Power up PCMS device. (CD/DVD drives will power up. Hard drives may need to be connected to USB port to spin up.) Then plug in USB cable to computer. WinXP will detect PCMS and install device as a new drive letter. Thats it. You must remember to go to computer management (under administration) and partition and format the drive if the drive is new or needs to be (re)configured for use.
The device itself is of good quality and design. I recommend it. Follow the above instructions and use known good hardware before deciding if there is a problem with the PCMS. I especially love the fact that you don't have to load any drivers/software. Can't beat the price, especially with free shipping. Thanks PCMicroStore!

Had the device about 4 days and it isn't going well. I'm ready to throw the jumpers in the air and take the PC case off and use the center of the C: drive cable to make D: slave drives and read them all that way. Run auto detect in CMOS and not use your cable at all. Should be worth about 10 bucks and thanks for free shipping though. I have a "remove hardware" green icon on my system tray when something finally loads and you're supposed to use that to stop the drive before unplugging it. "usb storage device" is listed along with 3 or 4 failed attempts that list hard drives that are in the memory of the machine and not in "device manager" or "my computer". I can stop one process and the green icon vanishes before I can clear the 3 or 4 listed failed attempts.

Fantastic product. Worked the first time. 40GB Seagate from an old PC. Left jumper set at "cable select". XP recognized the disk as an external USB, ready to use. Ran a chkdsk, virus scan, copied off files.
Caution - be sure the IDE connector is secure in the disk socket & put the disk on a mouse pad for the work. It does get warm!

Plugged in 30 gb Quantum Fireball hard drive from previous computer, worked fine out of the box. Old files on drive still usable. Set jumper to Master. UBS cable is 30 inches long, power cables combined, 7 feet. Thinking about encasing this rig in a Tupperware food container.
    , 7/27/2006 1:07 AM
I received this product today and immediately went to work on my old hard drives. I have everything from 771MB 2.5" to a 6GB Quantum Bigfoot to a 41GB 3.5" drive. The computer instantly recognized all of them and I was able to format them using Computer Management/Disk Management in Win XP, SP2. Maybe the people who gave this item a 1 don't follow instuctions. I did and it worked as advertized.
    , 7/26/2006 1:46 AM
At first I couldn't get this product to recognize my IDE hard drive. After I read the reviews, I tried setting the jumper to C. As soon as I did that it recognized my drive immediately. Transfer of data was smooth and flawless. I am using a Win XP OS. Although a bit awkward to set up, it is workable. A really good buy for the money and way quicker than any other alternative like burning everything onto CD or uploading and then downloading on a new computer...

Works great with my XP systems! There was slight confusion at first when I plugged in the power to the drive. I expected it to spin up, but it doesn't do that until you plug in the USB to the computer. It would be nice if the USB cable was a bit longer, but otherwise it's a great product.

I have a whole mess of old drives laying around all over the place because I love build computers. I accidently ordered 2 of these because my browser crashed during the ordering process. They both arrived at the same time and I promptly returned one of them before I tried it. Now I wish I hadn't returned it because I love it! I have 4 windows xp boxes, 2 linux boxes (fedora on one and damn small linux on the other), and a mac with tiger. This thing worked beautifully on all of them. Windows xp, linux, and the mac, read my discs right away, I was even able to salvage a disc that was so old it had dos on it and 512 mb of memory! If you have a new unformatted disc, you have to remember to initialize it first or it will look like this thing doesn't work. I'm so happy, I even had an old buslink enclosed drive from the days when you needed drivers to use an enclosure. I no longer had the drivers so it had been sitting in drawer all this time. I opened it up took out the drive and this thing worked like a charm, I found pictures on this I had taken over six years ago :)

Excellent purchase!! I bought this adapter base on recommendation from a PCMagazine article. It worked well with all 3 of mine ide device: 80GB WD HD, 300GB Segate HD and DVD-RW DW-1620. Great product, highly recommended.
    , 7/8/2006 11:35 PM
Supposedy, this supports up to 400GB hard drives. But what they don't tell you is that you must format HDs as FAT in order for it to work, and Windows doesn't support FAT over 32GB. So, this cable is completely useless if you hard drive is bigger than 32GB (which it almost certainly is). A useless product, deceptively marketed.
    , 6/18/2006 5:31 AM
Works like a champ! Use it with XP to test, format and use 3.5" and 2.5" IDE hard drives. Even tried it with my internal Nec 16x DVD IDE drive, worked great!!!
    , 5/13/2006 4:54 PM
A Little flimsey, but works. To get it to work with a new 2.5" laptop drive in win2000, right click on my computer, click "manage", select "disk management", select the drive and format it. Then, you will see it in my computer.
    , 5/12/2006 9:41 PM
Wouldn't work on first two XP machines that I tried it on, one desktop, one a laptop. Worked fine on the third, a desktop with new mobo and clean OS install, but only in an onboard USB port, not in a PCI card based USB port. If this is typical, not so good for using the spare drive for data transfer but OK for back-up on this one machine. If it keeps working, that is.
    , 5/10/2006 6:20 AM
Works fine on an IBM T40 (USB 2.0) running up-to-date XP Pro and IBM drivers. The same disk is NOT recognized on an IBM T22 (USB 1.1) running up-to-date XP Pro and IBM drivers. Evidently the 1.1 compatibility in this product is not all that it should be.
    , 2/7/2006 4:17 AM
Worked with all types of interface. 2.5" adapter is bit flimsy not sure when it will break. Great for the price.
    , 1/9/2006 4:28 AM
Drive was not detected on any machine or drive configuration, locked up machine on boot, cheaply constructed.
    , 12/17/2005 6:46 PM
Good, cost effective solution for adding extra storage to your notebook or computer. Works well for me. Those who couldn't make it work may've been doing something wrong. For the drive to be visible it must be formatted. In XP you can do that by My Computer--rt click--Manage--Disk Mgmt--Initialize--Format. I've placed the jumpers in cable select but even master is OK. Windows Firewall needn't be disabled in Win XP.
    , 12/15/2005 10:00 PM
This works very well. Only draw back of this is, the IDE 40 Pin connector which is little smaller at both ends of the connector. Care should be taken when you connect the hard disk because the connector fits upside down too. So use it carefully. I am using this with Windows 2000 Professional and XP works well. Did not tried with Windows 98, will write if used in Windows 98.
    , 11/10/2005 1:39 PM
This thing has worked perfectly for me!!! I have had zero problems with this.
    , 11/5/2005 2:12 PM
This item works well, if you can get one that's not defective. It's also so cheap that Paying to return it and hoping you get a good one is hardly worth it.
    , 10/6/2005 2:43 AM
Very NICE piece of computer equipment. I did notice, IF you're using it on Win2000, it will try to load a wrong INF file, with automatic installation, so click the box to "Select Additional Drivers" and then choose the MicroSoft one, this was the case with MY Win2000 installation. For WinXP it does find the propper driver within XP. Your drive should have NO jumper, OR set for Master. I don't think it will work with Original Win98, so be worned, but IT does work well for WinXP SP2, Win2000 SP4, I didn't test it on my MCE yet, but that should work too. VERY NICE .. I did notice they raised the price to $18.00 ... from $17.00 last week ... I guess it's getting popular ... :-)

Just recieved my adapter the other day. I hooked up an extra ATA/IDE notebook drive that I had and my laptop found it right away. Great product.
    , 9/27/2005 5:01 PM
I have an ATA/EIDE hard drive. Does the cable work with it, or just work with IDE hard drives?
    , 9/26/2005 5:19 PM
I found it's necessary (on some systems) to temporarily disable the firewall so XP will see the drive. This may help some of the above problems with the device seeing the drive.
    , 9/21/2005 10:06 PM
This adapter saved me a lot of time compare to the conentional external enclosure box. I work in a IT dept and aboslutely love this gadget. For those of you that cannot get it to work. Try setting the jumpers to either cable select or master.
    , Trollie, 8/28/2005 5:24 AM
Great adapter. Fast shipping and awesome price. Worked flawlessly with my WD2500JB and DVR-109. I highly recommend this product if you often swap out drives.
    , 8/21/2005 4:59 AM
Was able to connect any device and it worked properly. For desktop hard drives and CD-ROM drives, need to change the jumpers to Cable select and not slave or master.
    , 7/23/2005 5:57 AM
Received product but was DOA. Power supply doesn't spin disks, light on power supply doesn't light up (is there a correlation here? :)
I'm applying for a RMA to get another device (one that works I hope) and will follow this up later.
    , 7/20/2005 10:31 AM
Great product. I tested a CDROM drive, IDE hard drive, & a notebook hard drive and I was able to see all of these devices and the contents of what was on the hard drives. The best thing about this is its USB and you no longer need to open you PC chassis to troubleshoot bad drives.
    , 7/8/2005 7:11 PM
haven't tried it yet
